Operating over 13,000 km of high-voltage transmission lines and 128 substations across NSW and the ACT, we connect electricity generators to the distribution network—powering homes, businesses, and communities.
The Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced Senior Transmission Line and Cable Design Engineer to join our Transmission Line Design team, based in our Ultimo office in Sydneys CBD.
In this senior technical role, you will lead and deliver complex layout design activities for high-voltage transmission lines and underground cables. Working across major network projects, you will provide specialist engineering advice, complete and approve designs, coordinate internal and external design resources, and support projects from feasibility and route selection through to construction.
You will also act as a trusted technical resource within the team, sharing your expertise, coaching others and helping strengthen Transgrid’s engineering standards and design capability.
A Day in the Life
You will work across complex transmission infrastructure projects, combining hands-on technical design with design assurance, stakeholder coordination and specialist engineering advice. While much of your focus will be on delivering high-quality design outcomes, you will also play an important role in guiding consultants, supporting project teams and strengthening capability across the broader design function.
In this role, you will:
- Deliver, review and approve transmission line and underground cable designs in line with relevant standards, legislation and Transgrid requirements
- Complete route selection, PLS-CADD modelling, line schedules, stringing outputs, rating assessments, design reports and site verification activities
- Coordinate internal engineers and external consultants to deliver design outcomes within agreed scope, schedule, quality and budget requirements
- Investigate complex technical challenges and develop practical, safe and commercially considered engineering solutions
- Provide technical guidance to colleagues while contributing to improved design standards, procedures and work practices
Why this role matters
Australia’s energy system is undergoing significant transformation, and the transmission network is critical to enabling that change.
The designs you deliver will directly influence the safety, reliability, constructability and long-term performance of essential transmission infrastructure. Your technical expertise will help Transgrid deliver complex projects, connect new generation and maintain a secure electricity network for communities across NSW and the ACT.
About You
You are an experienced design engineer with strong technical capability across transmission line and/or underground cable design. Comfortable operating in a senior specialist role, you can work autonomously on complex assignments, review and approve the work of others, and provide clear, practical advice to project teams and stakeholders.
You will bring:
- A degree qualification in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent discipline
- Demonstrated experience in transmission line and/or underground cable functional layout design
- Advanced proficiency in PLS-CADD, with experience using CDEGS, CYMCAP, ProjectWise or MicroStation viewed favourably
- Strong knowledge of relevant Australian and international standards, design assurance and Safety in Design requirements
- Well-developed communication, stakeholder management and problem-solving skills, with the ability to guide and support other engineers
