ABOUT TRANSGRID

At Transgrid, we play a crucial role in delivering safe, reliable, and sustainable energy to millions of Australians. Operating over 13,000 km of high-voltage transmission lines and 128 substations across NSW and the ACT, we connect electricity generators to the distribution network powering homes, businesses, and communities. As Australia accelerates its energy transition, the work we do has never been more significant.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Transgrid is looking for a Senior / Project Engineer with solid high-voltage substation experience to join the Delivery Project team and take on the engineering management function across an active portfolio of 330kV and 500kV projects in Central West NSW.

You will work alongside the Project Manager managing the technical side of delivery RFI responses, IFC designs, design coordination for construction, as-built processes and asset acceptance and you will carry full delivery accountability on directly assigned projects where no Project Manager is in place. The portfolio spans 330kV bay construction and upgrades with secondary systems work, and the commissioning of a new 500kV switching station. Each project involves interface with Transgrid's System Operations and commissioning teams and requires disciplined engineering management on and near live network assets.

The role mixes technical engineering and project management and the balance shifts depending on where each project is in the delivery cycle. You need to be comfortable managing a technical coordination day and a reporting and earned value cycle in the same week. If you have done this kind of work before on transmission infrastructure and are ready for a role that gives you genuine scope across a varied portfolio, this is worth pursuing.

A DAY IN THE LIFE

The week shifts depending on where each project sits in the delivery cycle.

  • Technical Engineering: Managing RFI responses, developing and reviewing project specifications, coordinating design responses for construction issues and keeping IFC designs current to the applicable standards. You are the technical point of contact for contractors and the person engineering and System Operations teams engage with on technical matters from the field.
  • Secondary Systems and Commissioning Coordination: Coordinating the protection and control upgrades at the 330kV sites and the secondary system changes at their remote ends. For Barigan Creek, managing the engineering interface through the 500kV switching station commissioning program working with the Transgrid commissioning team on sequencing, outage coordination and technical readiness.
  • Design and As-Built Management: Keeping IFC designs current across the portfolio and managing the work-as-executed and as-built drawing processes so the technical record of each project is complete through to handover and asset acceptance.
  • Independent Project Delivery: On directly assigned projects, you set up the project plan, hold the budget and schedule, coordinate procurement and stakeholders and report directly to the Project Manager. You are accountable for the outcome.
  • Reporting and Earned Value: Weekly and monthly project status reports and earned value assessments as directed by the Project Governance and Assurance Team. You flag cost and schedule issues early, not when they have already become a problem.
  • Stakeholder Coordination:Maintaining effective working relationships with internal teams and external consultants across planning, development and execution. You communicate clearly and follow through on what you say you will do.

WHY THIS ROLE MATTERS

Bayswater, Mt Piper and Wallerawang are operating substations in the Central West that play a direct role in how generation connects to the transmission network. The bay construction and upgrade works at these sites are part of Transgrid's ongoing program to strengthen and expand network capacity as the region's generation mix changes. Barigan Creek is a new 500kV switching station that adds a significant new node to the transmission network.

The engineering that goes into these projects the RFI responses that resolve construction problems correctly, the IFC management that keeps design and construction aligned, the commissioning coordination that makes Barigan Creek safe to energise determines whether the assets that go into service are fit for purpose and whether the network can rely on them. That is what this role is responsible for.

ABOUT YOU

An engineering degree or solid industry experience on large-scale projects, with hands-on knowledge of high-voltage substation construction. You can manage the technical side of a delivery program independently, handle contractors and consultants and run a project without being closely supervised.

  • Degree in a relevant engineering discipline, or substantial industry experience delivering large-scale capital projects.
  • Demonstrated experience managing the engineering function on high-voltage substation projects including RFI management, IFC coordination, design responses for construction and as-built processes.
  • Practical understanding of secondary systems including protection and control, and experience coordinating secondary systems work alongside primary plant construction.
  • Familiarity with the interface between substation construction and transmission network operations, including outage coordination and working on or near live assets.
  • Experience managing construction contracts including scope, variations and contractor coordination.
  • Able to work autonomously across multiple concurrent projects and deliver to deadlines without close supervision.
  • High standard of written and verbal communication with the ability to produce clear technical reports, project status updates and earned value assessments.
  • Knowledge of Australian Standards, relevant legislation and government policy guidelines for engineering and construction projects.
  • Comfortable with regular travel to Central West NSW project sites including Bayswater, Mt Piper, Wallerawang and Barigan Creek.

Good to have:

  • Experience on Transgrid or comparable transmission network owner projects.
  • Experience on 500kV infrastructure including switching station construction or commissioning.
  • Knowledge of protection relay systems and experience coordinating protection and control upgrades on 330kV or 500kV infrastructure.
  • Experience on substation bay construction or upgrade projects involving both primary and secondary scopes.
  • Familiarity with earned value assessment and project performance reporting within a capital infrastructure program.
