Date: 26 Aug 2025

Location: Sydney, NSW, Australia

Company: TransGrid

At Transgrid, we play a crucial role in delivering safe, reliable, and sustainable energy to millions of Australians. Operating over 13,000 km of high-voltage transmission lines and 128 substations across NSW and the ACT, we connect electricity generators to the distribution network—powering homes, businesses, and communities.

As the energy sector evolves, we’re growing our workforce to drive innovation and transformation.

The Opportunity | Sydney & Newcastle Locations

At Transgrid, we are delivering one of Australia’s most critical renewable energy projects - The Synchronous Condenser (SynCons) program. These state-of-the-art machines play a vital role in stabilising the grid as more renewable generation comes online.

We are seeking a Senior Project Engineer to take the lead on the mechanical and rotating plant elements of this landmark program. This is a unique opportunity to shape the design, oversee delivery, and ensure technical excellence on a project that will underpin Australia’s energy transition for decades to come.

This is a newly created role designed to strengthen the project’s engineering capability as it moves into the intensive design and delivery phase. You’ll work at the heart of a diverse and high-performing project team, engaging directly with OEMs, design houses, and contractors, while collaborating with specialists across Transgrid.

A Day in the Life as a Senior Project Engineer

No two days will look the same, but your role will be about leading the engineering effort across design and delivery:

  • Reviewing and managing design packages from external design houses, ensuring quality, safety, and compliance with performance standards.
  • Acting as the interface between multiple design and delivery partners, resolving issues and driving alignment.
  • Getting hands-on in technical matters, from vibration analysis to commissioning planning, while also managing governance and reporting.
  • Challenging OEMs and contractors to deliver the right outcomes for Transgrid, driving innovation and cost efficiency.
  • Coordinating internal teams (construction, procurement, asset management) to keep the project moving.
  • Visiting project sites during construction and commissioning phases to ensure successful implementation.

You’ll be seen as the technical authority and mentor, collaborating closely with another Senior Project Engineer (electrical/secondary systems) and reporting directly to the Senior Project Manager.

About You

You are a mechanical engineer with rotating equipment expertise, ready to bring your skills to one of the most important grid-stability projects in Australia. You thrive in technically complex environments and are confident challenging designs, contractors, and established norms to get the best outcomes.

Your background will likely include:

  • A degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering – Mechanical preferred and highly regarded.
  • 5+ years’ experience in engineering roles within energy, utilities, or heavy industry.
  • Direct experience in the design, commissioning, or maintenance of rotating plant (generators, turbines, motors, compressors, synchronous condensers).
  • A track record of delivering large-scale projects through both office-based design coordination and field implementation.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to engage confidently with contractors, OEMs, consultants, and senior internal stakeholders.
  • Resilience, adaptability, and a safety-first mindset.

This is your chance to lead through expertise and influence, make your mark on a nationally significant project, and play a central role in the future of Australia’s energy system.
