ABOUT TRANSGRID

At Transgrid, we play a crucial role in delivering safe, reliable, and sustainable energy to millions of Australians. Operating over 13,000 km of high-voltage transmission lines and 128 substations across NSW and the ACT, we connect electricity generators to the distribution network powering homes, businesses, and communities. As Australia accelerates its energy transition, the work we do has never been more significant.

THE OPPORTUNITY

As coal-fired generation retires across the National Electricity Market, the grid loses the physical inertia it has always relied on to stay stable. Synchronous condensers are the technology addressing that gap. They are large rotating machines that provide reactive power, voltage support and inertia to the transmission network and they are among the most technically complex assets Transgrid is currently building.

We are looking for a Project Manager to take end-to-end delivery responsibility for assigned projects within the Synchronous Condenser Project. Reporting to the Senior Project Manager, you will manage all project activities across your assigned scope including schedule, budget, risk, contractor performance, governance and stakeholder engagement. You will also support the Project Director's engagement with Transgrid's Executive Leadership Team, providing clear and accurate visibility of project status, performance and plans.

Synchronous condenser installations bring together civil foundations, mechanical equipment erection, high-voltage electrical integration and complex protection and control systems. You need to understand the work well enough to ask the right questions, identify issues before they escalate and make sound decisions quickly when they do. This is a role for someone who is commercially sharp, operationally grounded and able to lead through complexity.

A DAY IN THE LIFE

Your time will be split between project sites across NSW and the project office. No two weeks are the same but here is a sense of what you will be managing.

  • Program Delivery and Schedule Management: Driving the integrated project schedule across all workstreams, monitoring contractor and subcontractor performance against milestones and keeping scope, quality and cost tracking to plan. You support overall project planning and conduct regular analysis of contractor schedule performance to keep the program moving.
  • Risk Management: Implementing the project risk management framework, maintaining visibility of risks and mitigations and providing the analysis the project team needs to make informed decisions. You escalate early so problems get addressed before they affect the program.
  • Project Governance and Reporting: Supporting the Project Director in managing project decisions in accordance with Transgrid's frameworks and policies. You prepare Project Oversight Group packs, management plans, project reports and other outputs required by senior leadership and the Executive Leadership Team.
  • Contractor and Commercial Management: Managing multi-discipline delivery partners across civil, mechanical and electrical scopes. You bring commercial discipline to how contracts are managed, hold delivery partners accountable and work with the Infrastructure Delivery leadership team to find the most efficient way to get the work done.
  • Integration and Interface Management: Coordinating third-party interfaces, supporting the development of interface agreements and making sure all interface dependencies are tracked and do not become schedule risks. You keep stakeholder engagement milestones visible in the integrated project schedule.
  • Team Development and Continuous Improvement: Contributing to the development of your team, supporting succession planning and fostering a culture of continuous improvement. You actively look for better ways to deliver and bring others along with you.

WHY THIS ROLE MATTERS

As renewable generation grows and coal-fired plant retires, the grid needs new sources of physical inertia to stay within safe operating limits. Without it, frequency and voltage cannot be managed reliably and the risk of system events increases. Synchronous condensers provide that inertia and the projects you will manage are a direct contribution to a grid that can support the energy transition without compromising reliability for the millions of Australians who depend on it.

The Synchronous Condenser Program is technically demanding, commercially significant and time-critical. The work you deliver in this role will be part of Australia's energy infrastructure for decades.
