ABOUT TRANSGRID

At Transgrid, we play a crucial role in delivering safe, reliable, and sustainable energy to millions of Australians. Operating over 13,000 km of high-voltage transmission lines and 128 substations across NSW and the ACT, we connect electricity generators to the distribution network powering homes, businesses, and communities. As Australia accelerates its energy transition, the work we do has never been more significant.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Demand for electricity from data centres is one of the fastest growing load categories in the National Electricity Market. Hyperscale and enterprise operators are building across NSW at a pace the transmission network has not had to accommodate before and they need high-voltage connection infrastructure delivered quickly and reliably. Transgrid is the network owner responsible for making those connections happen.

We are looking for a Project Manager to take end-to-end delivery responsibility for assigned data centre connection projects. Reporting to the Senior Project Manager, you will manage the full project lifecycle across your scope including scope definition, schedule, budget, risk, contractor management, stakeholder engagement and governance. .

A DAY IN THE LIFE

Data centre projects move quickly and the stakeholder environment is broad. Your time will be split between the project office and substation construction sites across NSW.

  • Program Delivery and Schedule Management: Driving the project schedule across all workstreams from design and procurement through to construction and energisation, monitoring contractor performance and keeping scope, quality and cost on track against the customer in-service date.
  • Customer and External Stakeholder Management: Managing the relationship with data centre customers through the connection project lifecycle, keeping them informed of progress, managing expectations around milestones and escalating any issues that could affect their connection date early enough to do something about it.
  • Risk and Governance: Implementing the project risk management framework, maintaining a current risk register and supporting the Senior Project Manager in managing project decisions in accordance with Transgrid's frameworks and policies.
  • Contractor and Commercial Management: Managing delivery partners across civil and electrical construction scopes, applying commercial discipline to contracts, working through claims and variations and keeping accountability clear across the supply chain.
  • Stakeholder Coordination and Reporting:Coordinating across Transgrid business units, network operators, and third-party interfaces. Preparing Project Oversight Group packs, management plans and performance reporting for the Senior Project Manager and Project Director.
  • Site Presence: Being on site during critical phases of substation construction, switchgear installation and commissioning to maintain visibility of progress, resolve issues and make sure the project is tracking to the energisation plan.

WHY THIS ROLE MATTERS

Data centres are the physical infrastructure behind the digital economy. Every delay in getting a data centre connected to the transmission grid has downstream consequences for the businesses and communities that depend on them. Transgrid's ability to deliver connection projects on time is a direct input into NSW's capacity to attract and support technology investment at scale.

The projects in this portfolio are high-visibility, commercially significant and technically demanding. They require a Project Manager who can hold a complex program together, manage a demanding customer environment and deliver results consistently.

ABOUT YOU

You will have an engineering background and a track record of delivering capital projects in energy, heavy infrastructure or a similarly complex environment. You are commercially sharp, can manage stakeholders and understand what it takes to hold a construction program together under time pressure.

  • Tertiary qualifications at degree level in Engineering or a relevant discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience managing capital projects in energy, transmission, infrastructure or a similarly capital-intensive environment.
  • Experience managing customer-facing projects where in-service dates carry contractual or commercial obligations.
  • Solid understanding of high-voltage substation construction including switchgear, transformers, protection and control systems and energisation sequences.
  • Track record of managing contractors on complex construction projects with the commercial acumen to manage claims, variations and contractor performance.
  • Experience managing external customer relationships through a project lifecycle, including milestone communication, risk escalation and expectation management.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills across engineering, commercial, operations, customers and executive audiences.
  • High level of business and commercial acumen with experience in contract management and negotiation.
  • Collaborative working style with the ability to operate effectively across a matrixed organisation.
  • Willingness to travel to project sites across NSW as required.

Highly Desirable:

  • Direct experience delivering data centre connection projects, contestable connection works or major customer connection assets on a transmission or distribution network.
  • Experience on high-voltage substation projects in Australia, particularly connection or augmentation works.
  • Exposure to AER regulatory frameworks or NER connection agreement obligations.
  • PMP, PRINCE2 or equivalent project management certification.
  • Experience working within a principal or asset-owner project delivery framework.
