The Opportunity
Transgrid is seeking a Principal Engineer, Network Transition Planning to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the NSW electricity system. This high-impact position sits linking long-term strategic planning and near-term operational readiness, ensuring the network evolves in step with the rapid transformation of the energy sector.
In this role, you will lead technical modelling, analysis, and strategic recommendations that support the secure, reliable and efficient transition of the electricity transmission system for Transgrid and its customers. You will focus on the medium-term planning horizon, identifying, analysing and addressing emerging challenges such as minimum operational demand, shifting generation and load patterns, and the timing of major transmission projects.
Your insights will directly inform executive and board-level decisions, helping to safeguard system reliability and resilience while supporting national energy reform.
What You Will Be Responsible For
- Leading the development and implementation of Transgrid’s medium-term transition plan
- Conducting advanced power system analysis to support operational resilience and strategic decision-making
- Identifying system risks and collaborating with stakeholders to implement mitigation strategies
- Preparing clear, concise reports and briefings for executives, boards, and non-technical audiences
- Representing Transgrid in industry forums and contributing to policy and reform initiatives
- Mentoring engineers and fostering a high-performance, collaborative team culture
About You
You are a strategic and technically accomplished engineer with a deep understanding of electricity network operations and planning. You thrive in complex, fast-evolving environments and are passionate about enabling Australia’s energy transition.
You bring:
- A degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience
- Extensive experience in power system modelling, planning, or operations
- Strong knowledge of the National Electricity Market, National Electricity Rules, and energy reform initiatives
- A proven track record of leading complex projects and delivering measurable outcomes
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Experience mentoring and developing engineering teams
- A collaborative mindset and commitment to continuous improvement
