The Lead Design Engineer – Transmission Lines is responsible for design activities associated with High-voltage Transmission line projects with the Transgrid network. This position develops and applies international best practice design policies and practices in the design of Transgrid’s high-voltage network whilst complying with standard design manuals and established practices. The position provides specialist expertise, technical advice, reports, drawings, specifications, and design standards for use within Transgrid and by external contractors for design, construction and asset management.
The role requires high level business acumen, insight, and agility to respond to competitive pressures and to hand over complete, accurate, appropriate, and affordable projects for delivery. The position reports to Engineering Manager-Major Projects and coaches and mentors more junior staff.
As Lead Design Engineer – Transmission Lines you will:
- Lead the development and maintenance of Transmission line design criteria and standard designs
- Develop processes for design delivery:
- Manage the Preparation and Review of Transmission line designs both through internal resourcing and coordinating external providers for Major Projects
- Plan and manage all design deliverables in conjunction with other design groups to ensure that project budgets and schedules are met
- Prepare action plans; assign priorities to tasks and estimate costs in accordance with TransGrid policies and procedures
- Provide regular progress reports that identify issues, problems and recommended solutions to meet progress and expenditure targets for the project
- Identify and effectively communicate issues which have the potential to adversely affect a design
- Competently use relevant TransGrid Business information systems after training
- Demonstrate proficiency in the use of engineering software to prepare high voltage designs
Skills & Experience
- Degree qualification in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
- Extensive solid demonstrated experience in the functional design areas of transmission lines 132 kV and above; fully proficient and has specialised expertise in a range of technical processes and procedures
- Working knowledge of appropriate Australian (AS7000), International Standards and Codes of Practice relevant to transmission line design
- Knowledge and understanding of National Electricity Rules relevant legislation, policies and procedures applicable to the preparation of designs and specifications
- Ability to complete, review and approve project designs with external consultants
- Able to lead or liaise with a small group of Professional and Engineering Officers in the completion of designs to meet project requirements and timeframes; may act as a team lead for projects providing subject matter guidance or facilitate the work of others
- Proficient in the use of engineering business systems and design software, preferably Bentley ProjectWise and PLS CADD, to develop, analyse and review transmission line designs
- Working knowledge of design quality assurance processes to ensure that designs meet quality requirements
- Ability to promote a high standard of professionalism, effective communication and personal integrity within the design team
- Ability to work in a team environment
- Demonstrated experience in leading and managing a team
- Demonstrated experience in managing stakeholders
- Practical experience in design and construction
