Intermediate Design Engineer – Communications Design

The Opportunity 

In your new role as Intermediate Design Engineer, you will contribute to the planning, design, and implementation of advanced telecommunications systems that are critical to the operation of the high-voltage electricity network across New South Wales.

The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering high-quality communications designs, developing technical standards, and providing expert guidance throughout the project lifecycle.

This position offers the chance to work on complex, large-scale infrastructure projects in a collaborative and forward-thinking environment, where your expertise will directly support the reliability, safety, and innovation of the energy sector.

What You’ll Do 

• Lead and deliver designs for substation Communications Systems using technologies such as MPLS-TP, SDH/PDH, and DWDM, ensuring compliance with Transgrid and international standards.
• Develop and maintain communications system standards, templates, architecture drawings, and tools to support efficient design delivery.
• Provide technical support during commissioning and maintenance phases, including expertise in ConnectMaster systems and Network Management Systems.
• Conduct feasibility studies, interface designs, and prepare detailed design documentation including concept designs, cutover plans, and commissioning packs.
• Manage design schedules, coordinate with vendors and contractors, and ensure project milestones are met within budget and timeframes. 

About You

• Proven experience in designing telecommunications systems, ideally within the power utility sector, with strong knowledge of MPLS-TP, DWDM, SDH, and PDH technologies.
• Proficiency in configuring multiplexer equipment, managing IP addressing, and operating ConnectMaster systems.
• Solid understanding of Australian and IEC standards, National Electricity Rules, AEMO guidelines, and cybersecurity requirements for critical infrastructure.
• Skilled in preparing detailed communications schematics, rack layouts, connection diagrams, and service drawings.
• Strong team player with the ability to lead design reviews, collaborate with external consultants, and manage tasks independently within tight timeframes.
