The Opportunity

Transgrid is at the forefront of Australia’s transition to a clean energy future. We are the backbone of the National Electricity Market, and we are pursuing a nation-changing portfolio of infrastructure projects that will accelerate the decarbonisation of our economy.

We are reinforcing the transmission network in southern NSW with HumeLink - a new 500 kV transmission line project that will improve the flow of electricity between new generation sources and major demand centres in NSW.  It is one of the state’s largest energy infrastructure projects, with about 360 km of proposed new transmission lines, and new or upgraded infrastructure at three locations.

As an Equipment Engineer you will be responsible for providing specialised expertise on high-voltage equipment within Transgrid’s Major Projects Division, with a primary focus on the HumeLink Project. This includes transformers, shunt reactors, and other critical electrical plant and equipment.

You will be involved in developing, coordinating, and implementing testing plans and technical standards, ensuring compliance with project-specific technical requirements and industry standards, and supporting defect investigation and resolution.

The role is based in Ultimo with international travel and site visit requirements to Wagga Wagga, Bannaby or Maragle once/twice per month for a few days at a time (therefore overnight stays are essential).  The cost of travel and accommodation will be covered by Transgrid.

About you

  • Tertiary qualification at degree level in an Electrical Engineering discipline and/or Advanced Diploma in Electrical Engineering with extensive relevant experience.
  • Current Driver’s Licence
  • Experience in large-scale project environments: Specifically, experience in high-voltage equipment management for major infrastructure projects, including transformers, shunt reactors, and HV conductors.
  • Proven expertise in Quality Assurance and compliance processes specific to large-scale project environments, including hands-on experience in conducting inspections, testing activities, factory audits, and a preference for lead auditor certification or equivalent experience.
  • Exemplary written and oral communication skills for the generation and development of specifications, standards, bid contributions, training and mentoring.
  • Demonstrated experience in delivering expectations and dealing with suppliers in terms of technical processors (such as Design Review Meetings) and issues (such as testing failures).
  • An understanding of safety in design principles and experience in negotiating design enhancements with suppliers.
  • Demonstrated and extensive experience in specifying, assessment of design, testing, assessment of test results and verification of equipment gained in a High Voltage equipment role for the equipment included above.
  • Knowledge of the design and application of power systems equipment and maintenance practice.  A technical understanding of the plant and interaction between the plant and other parts of the network is required.
  • Knowledge and demonstrated experience in engineering practice including drawings, drawing systems and project skills.
  • The provision of technical assurance to Transgrid personnel and proponents and bid or project negotiation experience.
  • Knowledge and understanding of relevant legislation, policies, and procedures
  • Knowledge of Transgrid computer systems; Word, Excel, TRIM, Ellipse etc.  The position holder is responsible for maintaining accurate plant records and contract documentation.
