The Opportunity

 

We are looking for a Substations Asset Engineer with to join our Asset Management team. This role requires understanding and some experience in electricity networks.

 

About the role 

 

In the role of Substations Asset Engineer, you will assist in the development of asset strategies for substation primary equipment across the entire life cycle. The position will support more senior team members and provides an excellent opportunity to develop experience and expertise while contributing to the goals of the tam.

The position requires some experience in electricity network environment or a related field which the applicant can build upon in this role.

 

What would your day look like?  

 

  • Analysing substation asset condition and performance.
  • Investigating technical issues, challenges, project queries to make recommendations for improvement.
  • Reviewing and developing asset health index, probability of failure, and consequence modelling for substation assets. 
  • Identifying, investigating, and implementing new technologies/equipment/work practice to achieve balance of cost, risk, and performance over the entire asset lifecycle.
  • Developing the appropriate governance documentation to identify needs, options, and justify investment for replacement or refurbishment of our assets. 
  • Analysing of asset data of various kinds to identify issues and potential solutions to achieve the team objectives.
  • Working with senior asset engineers to develop strategies for high voltage substation assets.

 

The type of assets that are being managed by the substations team includes:

 

  • Power transformers and auxiliary transformers.
  • Substation switch bay equipment including circuit breakers, instrument transformers, disconnectors, surge arresters.
  • Medium voltage switchboards and high voltage gas insulated switchgear (GIS).
  • Shunt and series reactors, static var compensators, capacitor banks, line series compensation devices
  • Gas turbines and synchronous condensers
  • Switchyards, drainage, gantry structures, steelwork, compounds, footings, earthing, high voltage cabling, busbars, insulators, online condition monitoring and other supporting infrastructure.

 

You will provide valuable input and strategic recommendations to Transgrid’s Asset Management group and Transgrid’s ISO certified Asset Management System.

 

About you – Asset Engineer

 

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering or similar with some experience in some aspect of design, maintenance, construction or asset management of relevant assets
  • Some level of technical knowledge of the design, construction, operation, maintenance, asset planning and/or analysis of high voltage equipment and supporting infrastructure in substations
  • Understanding of the concepts and application of risk management
  • Relevant experience working in a utility, utility environment or asset intensive industry
  • Commercial acumen and understanding of asset investment justification
  • Understanding of the maintenance of relevant assets, safety issues and the environment
  • Desire to develop understanding of both technical and economic components in the evaluation of options for solution of asset management issues
