About Transgrid

Transgrid builds and maintains the largest electricity network in Australia, providing the backbone of the National Electricity Market while supporting the transition to a cleaner energy future. Join us and help make a better power system for generations to come.

The opportunity

Build a specialist career protecting the high voltage network that powers millions of homes and businesses. You will work on the systems that detect faults and respond in milliseconds, protecting people, critical assets and the stability of the wider power system.

We are growing our Secondary Systems teams and have opportunities for Protection and Metering Technicians across Greater Sydney (Eastern Creek base location), Newcastle, Yass, Wagga Wagga, Tamworth and Orange. You will help protect the equipment, people and communities that rely on the safe and dependable operation of the high voltage transmission system.

We are recruiting across a range of experience levels, from qualified electrical tradespeople ready to move into protection through to experienced protection professionals. Your position level and remuneration will reflect the capability and experience you bring. Protection experience will be central to your success. Metering is also an important part of the role, but deep metering experience is not essential. If you bring strong protection foundations and motivation to learn, we will support you to develop broader capability across metering and secondary systems.

The impact you will make

You will work across modern and legacy systems, combining practical field work with detailed testing, analysis and safe decision making.

  • Maintain, test and fault find protection relays and schemes, from electromechanical equipment to modern numerical relays.
  • Support installation and commissioning across transmission lines, transformers, reactors, busbars, circuit breaker fail schemes and other critical assets.
  • Develop capability across revenue, check and statistical metering, including relevant testing and documentation.
  • Interpret schematics, complete diagnostic testing and contribute to safe switching, isolations and protection withdrawal activities.
  • Work with experienced technicians, engineers and project teams to improve methods, resolve defects and deliver reliable outcomes.

Bring your best. We will support the rest.

Whether you are moving into protection or bringing years of specialist experience, we will support you to continue building your technical career. Your position level and remuneration will reflect the capability and experience you bring, supported by:

  • A company vehicle to support travel and field work
  • 16.5% superannuation
  • A rostered day off every fortnight
  • Field and General-Purpose Allowances
  • Practical training and development across protection, metering and emerging secondary systems technology
  • 20 weeks paid parental leave, novated leasing and a wide range of corporate discounts designed to support your wellbeing, lifestyle and career.

What you will bring

We are open to candidates at different stages of their careers. You may be looking to move into protection with strong electrical and technical foundations, or you may already bring considerable experience across protection systems, testing, fault finding and commissioning.

    • A Certificate III in Electrotechnology, equivalent electrical trade qualification or another qualification relevant to the assessed grade.
    • Ideally a foundational level of practical experience with protection systems, relays, schemes, testing, maintenance, fault finding or commissioning.
    • The ability to interpret electrical schematics and apply sound diagnostic thinking in a field environment.
    • A collaborative and safety focused approach, with the ability to work independently when required and a willingness to keep developing.
    • A current NSW driver license, and willingness to travel and work across the network.

Why this role?

This is a chance to deepen your protection expertise while building capability across metering, control systems and emerging technologies such as IEC 61850. You will be supported by experienced teams, formal training and practical exposure to some of the most important assets in Australia’s energy system.

Be part of something bigger

Safety comes first in every test, isolation and commissioning activity. You will work alongside a connected team that shares knowledge, acts with integrity and delivers reliable outcomes for our customers and communities.
