The Opportunity

Are you ready to lead the development and delivery of some of the most critical infrastructure projects in Australia’s energy transformation? As Director of Customer Projects at Transgrid, you’ll be at the forefront of capital project delivery, overseeing up to $0.5B in annual expenditure across a complex and high-impact infrastructure portfolio. The portfolio of projects connects new generation and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) projects to the transmission network, and each project ranges in value typically between $5M to $100M.

 

Reporting directly to the General Manager of Infrastructure Delivery, you’ll lead multidisciplinary teams to develop, plan, execute, and deliver major infrastructure projects that are customer-focused, commercially sound, and technically robust. Your role will span the full project lifecycle, from feasibility and concept design through to execution, commissioning, and review. Ensuring projects are delivered safely on time, within budget, and to the highest standards of quality and governance.

 

You’ll work closely with stakeholders across the organisation and beyond, from regulatory bodies and commercial partners to local communities and government agencies balancing strategic leadership with operational excellence to deliver outcomes that support Transgrid’s long-term vision. This is a pivotal leadership role that combines strategic oversight with hands-on project delivery expertise. You’ll be instrumental in enabling Transgrid to meet growing energy demands and deliver on our commitment to safe, reliable, and sustainable energy infrastructure.

 

A Day in the Life at Transgrid

Every day brings a new challenge in this dynamic, high-impact leadership role. As the Director of Customer Projects, your typical day may include:

  • Leading strategic planning and execution discussions with the Infrastructure Delivery leadership team, Lumea team, and Network Connections teams.
  • Overseeing the delivery of a diverse portfolio of customer projects - ensuring timelines, budgets, and quality standards are met.
  • Facilitating cross-functional alignment between Engineering, Construction, Commercial, and Portfolio Controls teams.
  • Engaging with government agencies, regulatory bodies, and community stakeholders to navigate complex planning and approval pathways.
  • Reviewing and approving critical project documentation, risk frameworks, and governance controls.
  • Leading internal project reviews, mentoring delivery leads, and fostering a high-performance culture.
  • Collaborating with Procurement and contractors to optimise value and strengthen performance across EPC, D&C, and Alliance delivery models.
  • Representing Transgrid at industry and government forums, bringing a commercial and customer-focused mindset to major infrastructure challenges.

 

 

About You

You’re an experienced infrastructure leader who thrives on delivering complex projects and building high-performing teams. You’re commercially savvy, collaborative, and ready to take on a pivotal role driving energy transformation.

 

To succeed in this role, you’ll bring:

  • A proven track record in delivering large-scale, multi-year capital projects in energy, utilities, transport, or heavy infrastructure.
  • Experience managing the full project lifecycle, from early concept and feasibility through to execution, commissioning, and closeout - Industry leading Project Management is a key to success in this role.
  • Strong commercial acumen, with deep knowledge of contract models such as EPC, D&C, and Alliance along with and the ability to negotiate and manage contracts for long-term value.
  • A natural ability to build trust with executive stakeholders, government agencies, community groups and delivery partners. You're a skilled communicator with executive presence.
  • Tertiary qualifications in Project Management, Engineering or a related field, and a solid understanding of technical development and engineering standards.
  • Familiarity with the planning, regulatory, and environmental frameworks that govern major infrastructure delivery, especially within the energy sector and the National Electricity Market.
  • A collaborative leadership style, with experience managing multi-disciplinary teams and driving a culture of performance, inclusion, and continuous improvement.
  • A commitment to safety, governance, and risk management always embedding high standards across every phase of delivery.
