The Opportunity
We are looking for a Senior Asset Engineer (Asset Strategist) or an Asset Engineer, with significant experience in rotating machines, to join our team. These two roles represent different levels of experience, so regardless of your experience level, we are excited to speak with you.
About the role
In the role of Senior Asset Engineer (Asset Strategist) or Engineer for the Substations Portfolio, you will analyse and develop strategies for rotating machines and substation primary assets across the entire life cycle. The Asset Strategist position requires a higher level of experience and leadership ability and working autonomously.
The position requires relevant experience in managing, operating and/or maintaining rotating machines that can be utilised to help manage Transgrid’s synchronous condensers and gas turbines and other substation assets. Ideally you should have experience in coal, hydro or gas power generation or in large-scale industrial rotating equipment.
What would your day look like?
- Analyse rotating machines and substation asset condition and performance.
- Reviewing and developing asset health index, probability of failure, and consequence modelling for substation assets.
- Identifying, investigating, and implementing new technologies/equipment/work practice to achieve balance of cost, risk, and performance over the entire asset lifecycle.
- Developing the appropriate governance documentation to identify needs, options, and justify investment for replacement or refurbishment of our assets.
The type of assets that are being managed by the substations team includes:
- Gas turbines and synchronous condensers – this will be a focus of this role
- Power transformers and auxiliary transformers.
- Substation switch bay equipment including circuit breakers, instrument transformers, disconnectors, surge arresters.
- Medium voltage switchboards and high voltage gas insulated switchgear (GIS).
- Shunt and series reactors, static var compensators, capacitor banks, line series compensation devices
- Switchyards, drainage, gantry structures, steelwork, compounds, footings, earthing, high voltage cabling, busbars, insulators, online condition monitoring and other supporting infrastructure.
You will provide valuable input and strategic recommendations to Transgrid’s Asset Management group and Transgrid’s ISO certified Asset Management System.
About you – Asset Strategist

- Sound understanding of the concepts and application of risk management
- Relevant experience working in a utility, utility environment or asset intensive industry
- Knowledge of regulatory and legal requirements relating to the construction and maintenance of relevant assets, safety issues and the environment
