Principal Engineer - System Security Analysis

About the Role

As a Principal Engineer, you will act as a technical authority in power system analysis, leading advanced studies and providing specialist advice on transmission network performance and generator connections.

You will play a key role in shaping long-term network strategies, improving analysis frameworks, and representing the organisation across industry forums and technical conferences.

What You’ll Be Doing

• Leading and undertaking system strength and system security analysis for complex transmission network challenges
• Providing expert advice on network planning, performance, and generator connections
• Overseeing detailed modelling and studies using PSCAD, PSS®E, SSAT, and similar tools
• Extensive experience with programming languages such as Python for automation purposes
• Developing and refining power system analysis methodologies, including for emerging technologies such as grid-forming batteries
• Leading options analysis and contributing to both network and non-network solutions
• Delivering high-quality technical reports, briefings, and presentations to senior stakeholders
• Supporting key planning activities such as system stability, fault performance, reactive power requirements, and control systems
• Representing the organisation in industry forums and engaging with stakeholders including AEMO
• Leading stakeholder discussions and influencing technical outcomes across the sector
• Mentoring engineers and building capability across the team

About You

You are a highly experienced and respected power systems engineer with strong technical depth and the ability to influence at a senior level.

You will bring:

• A degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline
• Extensive experience in power system and transmission planning, with a focus on system strength and system security
• Advanced expertise in tools such as PSCAD, PSS®E, SSAT, and similar platforms
• Strong experience modelling renewable generation, batteries, and synchronous machines
• Proficiency in Python and similar programming languages for automation and analysis
• Deep understanding of power system dynamics, including small signal stability and control systems
• Basic knowledge of control system concepts for the purpose of tuning exercise
• Strong knowledge of the National Electricity Market and its regulatory framework
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to influence senior stakeholders and represent the organisation externally
• A strategic mindset with strong problem-solving and analytical capability
• Postgraduate qualifications are highly regarded
