Commissioning Engineering Lead
Date: 7 Apr 2026
Location: Newcastle, NSW, Australia
Company: TransGrid

At Transgrid, we deliver the critical infrastructure that keeps communities, industry and major projects connected to safe, reliable and sustainable energy. As our network and project pipeline continue to grow, strong commissioning capability is essential to ensuring new assets, systems and technologies are brought online safely, efficiently and to the highest standard. This role plays an important part in leading that capability, strengthening team performance, and improving how commissioning support is delivered across the business.
The Opportunity | Greater Sydney, Hunter/Newcastle & Regional NSW Opportunity
This is an opportunity to step into a leadership role with real scope to shape team capability, improve operational performance and influence how commissioning support is delivered across Transgrid.
As Commissioning Engineering Lead, you will lead a large technical team and provide oversight across the commissioning lab and broader commissioning support activities. It is ideal for a leader who brings strong people leadership capability, supported by technical commissioning or control systems experience, and who is energised by building better processes, clearer structure and stronger team performance.
This is not a role focused only on technical depth. While commissioning experience is important, the bigger opportunity is to lead a function, empower a team, improve ways of working, and help create a more efficient and scalable operating model for the future.
A Day in the Life
In this role, you will lead a sizeable team and help shape how Transgrid’s commissioning support function operates into the future. Your day may involve:
- leading and developing a team of 15+ technical professionals
- creating clearer capability pathways, coaching team members and strengthening succession depth
- improving processes, documentation and workflow management across the commissioning function
- identifying bottlenecks, inefficiencies and wait times, then implementing practical improvements
- providing technical oversight and support across commissioning, control systems and related delivery activities
- partnering closely with stakeholders across Construction, Delivery and Engineering to keep work moving and priorities aligned
Why this role matters
This role is important because it sits at the centre of a function that helps enable safe, efficient and effective project delivery. Beyond leading the commissioning lab environment, this role will help drive greater consistency, coordination and productivity across the broader commissioning support model. It is an opportunity to step into a visible leadership role, make meaningful operational improvements, and help build a stronger, more scalable function for the future.
About You
You are a people leader first, with enough technical depth and commissioning experience to bring credibility, guidance and sound judgement to the team around you. You bring a strong leadership mindset and know how to build trust, accountability and performance across technical teams. You are someone who can step back, see where things are not working as well as they could, and introduce better ways of operating without losing sight of delivery outcomes.
You will likely bring experience from environments such as commissioning, control systems, utilities, testing, mining, heavy manufacturing, or other technically complex and quality-driven industries.
To be successful, you will ideally bring:
- proven experience leading technical or engineering teams in a commissioning, controls, testing or operational setting
- the ability to grow and empower teams, with a strong focus on capability uplift and succession planning
- experience improving processes, mapping workflows and lifting operational efficiency
- technical exposure across commissioning, control systems, testing environments or adjacent delivery functions
- strong stakeholder engagement skills and the ability to work across multiple teams and priorities
- a practical, improvement-focused mindset with the confidence to challenge inefficiencies and drive better outcomes
