ABOUT TRANSGRID

At Transgrid, we play a crucial role in delivering safe, reliable, and sustainable energy to millions of Australians. Operating over 13,000 km of high-voltage transmission lines and 128 substations across NSW and the ACT, we connect electricity generators to the distribution network powering homes, businesses, and communities. As Australia accelerates its energy transition, the work we do has never been more significant.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Commissioning is the phase of a project where everything either comes together or it does not. Years of engineering, procurement and construction work converge into a window where outages are constrained, coordination requirements are at their most complex and the margin for poor planning is at its lowest. The Commissioning Coordinator is the person who makes sure it comes together.

We are looking for a Commissioning Coordinator to join the Delivery group and take ownership of outage planning and commissioning execution across a portfolio of capital projects. Reporting to the Commissioning Manager, you will work closely with delivery partners, Transgrid's System Operations and Commissioning teams and a range of internal and external stakeholders to plan outages accurately, sequence commissioning activities correctly and ensure every project transitions to operations safely and on time.

This role involves real time on site across regional NSW and Sydney. Transgrid's current program spans substation upgrades, transmission line construction, synchronous condenser installations and data centre connections. The work is technically varied and operationally demanding. If you have a strong high-voltage background, solid outage management experience and the ability to coordinate across multiple parties without dropping the thread, this is a role worth pursuing.

A DAY IN THE LIFE

Your work will shift depending on where each project sits in the commissioning cycle. Here is a sense of what you will be managing across the role.

  • Outage Planning and Submission: Working with System Operations, delivery partners and project teams to establish accurate outage requirements, then managing timely submission of all outages in Theos including Requests for Access and Advice of Alteration. You keep the Project Outage Register current and make sure all relevant stakeholders are across what is coming up and any issues that could affect the program.
  • Commissioning Plan Development: Building and maintaining Commissioning Plans for each outage window, sequencing activities to meet System Operations requirements and coordinating Transgrid commissioning resources. You liaise with delivery partners on recall time profiles and make sure the plan reflects what can realistically be achieved in each outage window.
  • Pre-Energisation Management: Setting expectations with delivery partners and Transgrid commissioning teams on the form and format of pre-energisation documentation, overseeing the pre-energisation program and executing the energisation plan in line with project objectives and technical compliance requirements.
  • ITP and Documentation Review: Supporting the review of Delivery Partner commissioning Inspection and Test Plans, managing all commissioning documentation across the project lifecycle and compiling the complete commissioning documentation package to support project handover and completion.
  • Stakeholder Coordination: Building effective working relationships across Transgrid business units, delivery partners and external stakeholders to ensure the transition from construction to operations is well-coordinated. You keep everyone aligned on scope, timing and what is expected of them throughout the commissioning process.
  • Site Presence: Spending significant time on site across regional NSW and Sydney managing commissioning activities directly, working through issues as they arise and making sure all work is carried out safely and to the standard Transgrid's network requires.

WHY THIS ROLE MATTERS

A substation that is not properly commissioned is not ready to operate. The commissioning phase is where the technical integrity of an entire project is confirmed and the asset is formally handed to the network. Every outage window that is planned badly, every pre-energisation checklist that is not complete, and every documentation gap that reaches handover creates a problem that is harder and more expensive to fix once the project is closed.

The Commissioning Coordinator's job is to make sure none of that happens. The work you do in this role has a direct bearing on when new infrastructure goes live, when customers get connected and whether the assets Transgrid hands to operations are fit for purpose on day one.

ABOUT YOU

You will have a solid technical background in high-voltage electrical systems, whether through a degree or an electrical trade pathway, and direct hands-on experience with outage management and commissioning on substation or transmission line projects.

  • Tertiary qualifications in Electrical Engineering or a relevant discipline, or demonstrated relevant electrical trade experience in a high-voltage substation or transmission line environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of construction practice within the energy sector, with high-level technical understanding of substation and transmission line construction and commissioning.
  • Hands-on experience with outage management including submitting and managing Requests for Access and Advice of Alteration through Theos or a comparable outage management system.
  • Experience developing and maintaining commissioning plans, project outage registers and Inspection and Test Plan documentation.
  • Ability to self-manage, work under pressure and prioritise across competing demands with minimal supervision.
  • High level written and verbal communication skills with the ability to engage effectively across a wide range of stakeholders from site crews through to project management and System Operations teams.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain productive working relationships with delivery partners, commissioning teams and internal Transgrid business units.
  • Comfortable with significant travel to project sites across regional NSW and extended periods on site during commissioning phases.

Highly Desirable:

  • Experience commissioning complex electrical systems such as Synchronous Condensers, Static VAR Compensators or Special Protection Schemes.
  • Familiarity with Transgrid's System Operations processes, network access protocols and commissioning notification requirements.
  • Working knowledge of AEMO requirements for commissioning and energisation of transmission-connected assets.
  • Experience compiling commissioning documentation packages for project handover and asset registration.
  • Experience on data centre connection projects or major transmission connection assets.
  • Prior experience working on the asset owner or principal side of infrastructure delivery.
