The Opportunity

 

We’re looking for a highly motivated Assistant System Operator to join our Network Operations team. Based at either our Eastern Creek or Newcastle depot, you’ll support the safe and reliable operation of the high-voltage transmission network and play a key role in outage planning and real-time network operations.

 

This is a shift work role with a staged competency development program and opportunities for office rotations, giving you exposure to complex operational challenges and career development within one of the most essential teams in our business

 

A Day in the Life of a Assistant System Operator at Transgrid

 

Every day brings something new. You’ll work alongside System Operators, engineers, and field crews to keep the network operating safely and efficiently.

 

On any given shift, you could be:

 

  • Assessing potential network impacts and viability of outage plans
  • Preparing outage packages and High Voltage PRIs
  • Facilitating safe access for work on high-voltage apparatus
  • Liaising with AEMO and external customers to coordinate outages
  • Assisting in real-time network monitoring and responding to issues
  • Maintaining accurate logs and supporting operational documentation updates

 

You’ll be part of a close-knit, highly skilled team that values safety, technical excellence, and collaboration.

 

About You

 

You’re detail-oriented, calm under pressure, and thrive in structured environments. You enjoy problem-solving and working as part of a team to deliver safe and efficient outcomes. 

 

We’re interested in hearing from candidates who have:

 

  • Advanced Diploma or Degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent)
  • Knowledge of high-voltage transmission equipment and associated control, protection, and communication systems
  • Understanding of outage implications for market participants and Transgrid’s obligations
  • Familiarity with Safe Systems of Work and Power System Safety Rules
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency in Windows-based applications and operational tools (e.g., MS Office, SCADA/EMS platforms, and other Control Centre systems)

 

You may currently be working as a Network Operator, HV Switching Technician, Protection and Control Technician, or in a similar role within a utility, AEMO, or industrial setting. Above all, you're someone who takes ownership of your work, values safety and teamwork, and wants to be part of a team contributing to Australia’s clean energy future.
